Strumm & Singalong

Everyone is Welcome to participate

Hosted by Uke4Fun - held approx once a month.

It's impossible to not be happy while playing a ukulele! Designed as a get
together and catch up for adult players and beginners, you'll strum along
and sing to upbeat, well-known songs while learning basic chords.

Please bring your own GCEA-tuned ukulele with strap and music stand to these sessions. Meet new friends and enjoy the company of others with the
same interests as you and continue playing long after the session with
your newfound music skills! It doesn't matter what your skill levels,
everybody is invited to participate.

One rule, this is about having fun and is not to be taken seriously. It’s
really about having a jam and a strum along while singing a few songs.
This is not the place to perform, but to participate, support and encourage others.

Please let us know if you would like to lead a song in any of these
sessions to provide other players with timing and tempo, starts and stops,
and singing encouragement from the front of stage.

List of songs to be played on the day usually provided the week prior to
this session date.

Playtime Duration:
Usually, 2 x 35-minute song list and a 20-minute coffee break in between
Suitable Age: 18 +
Cost: $12* per session (* Subject to change)

Open Mic

Everyone is Welcome to participate!

Hosted by Uke4Fun, up to 4 times a year.

Open mics provide an opportunity for emerging Ukulele players to gain
experience performing to a live audience without having to go through the
process of getting normal music gigs, which is very difficult to do without
experience or a demo recording. They provide an outlet for singer-
songwriters.

The brilliant part about Open Mic is that anyone can simply go along, sign up, and perform either a cover version or their own original songs. It doesn't matter what your skill levels, everybody gets the chance to perform in front of a live audience.

Song Duration:
Try to keep song performance to under 4 minutes
Suitable Age: 18 +
Cost: Free

Live Performances

Performing isn't everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who enjoy or want to learn and develop their skills, to play in front of an audience (in the safety of a group) this might be right for you.

Millions of people suffer from performance anxiety, commonly called
"stage fright". In fact, most people would rather get the flu than perform. Athletes, musicians, actors, and public speakers often get performance anxiety. Performance anxiety can prevent you from doing what you enjoy and can affect your career.
We have found the more comfortable you are with your material the more you can enjoy performing. So, it means lots of rehearsal to have it become as natural as possible to flow through your chords and words. Then you can really focus on the moment and the crowd and show you are having fun. Nerves are typical and that’s where a nice intro can be helpful. Some people don’t ever speak to a crowd but I think it’s nicer to say hello at least and give a smile or a few words about each of our songs that we are performing.

Playtime Duration:
Usually, 2 x 35-minute song brackets with a 20-minute break in between
Suitable Age: 18 +

Cost: Your time – This is about giving back to the community.

Tips:
1. Be prepared - have everything just right BEFORE you go on.
2. Know exactly what you are going to do in the time given.
3. Be yourself.
4. Be yourself but be a little “more” yourself as you are communicating
with a group - not an individual.
5. Communicate with your audience, however small or large - I choose three or more people in the audience and as you talk or sing - glance in a friendly way at those people in turn. (But not long enough for it to look creepy!)
6. If you play a wrong note or chord- don’t stop and start again - don’t
show it on your face, - chances are your audience won’t know unless
you tell them by reacting.
7. Remember, when you are practicing at home - you are playing for
yourself, but when you have an audience, you are performing for
THEM.
8. KISS: Keep it simple - stupid.
